There is no minimum GPA to become a notetaker. Elite notetakers are selected by StudySoup and receive a base payment in addition to the regular commission.Īny student can apply to be an elite notetaker, begging the question: what makes these notetakers so elite?Įlite notetakers must go through an interview and training before they can begin posting their notes and are required to post weekly notes and exam study guides, while regular notetakers simply post their notes whenever they like, and undergo no training. On StudySoup, any student can upload their notes and study guides as a regular notetaker and receive a commission for each sale. The goal, according to Kozinsky, is to even the playing field and to raise the bar in terms of study materials available to students. For those missing class material, an alternative solution, note-sharing sites, raises a host of new questions.Ī new website called StudySoup pays students, whom they refer to as “elite notetakers” to post their weekly notes and exam study guide and then makes these resources available for purchase.Īccording to Sieva Kozinsky, CEO and co-creator of StudySoup, the site was born when he, a good student but poor notetaker, discovered that his co-founder, Jeff Silverman, an excellent notetaker, could make upwards of $500 per exam by selling his notes and study guides. HEAVY emphasis on marketing and recruiting, requiring you to spam your classmates repeatedly via email or your school's online messaging system when I had not yet done this, because I had no classes that fit their platform model, StudySoup *spammed my classmates on my behalf from my email address and with my signature, without my knowledge or permission!!!* Get ready to be the most hated person on campus.Whether because of a missed lecture, zoning out in class or poorly taken notes, many students find themselves without adequate study materials. Platform is clearly aimed at freshmen and freshman-level classes (i.e., young people who don't know any better) PYRAMID STRUCTURE - you the notetaker are meant to recruit other notetakers and receive a percentage of their sales a redder flag I've never seen in my life! This was last year when I was a Sophomore, and now I'm a junior and still an Elite Notetaker in some classes. This allowed me to drop my cafeteria job where I was making just $9.50 per hour so I could focus on school and my StudySoup position. Just to give you a sense of how much I made, after posting my 1st Biology study guide I made $427 in profits. I think it was started by a couple college students a few years ago which I thought was pretty cool too. The StudySoup team was pretty nice, and supportive throughout the process, even when I couldn't figure out how to get my notes uploaded the first time. I started posting notes for my intro-Calc and intro-Bio classes and was overwhelmed by the amount of students who were reaching out to buy the notes (Biology notes especially in my case). I'm usually taking notes in my classes anyways, so I figured this could be an easy way to make some money and maybe even help-out my classmates. After going through their information session and application process, I figured "eh, why not, I'll give it a try". I randomly heard about being a paid notetaker for StudySoup from one of my roommates at FIU.
